Wedding Band & Musicians Tipping Guide
Live bands bring an energy that DJs can't replicate. But tipping a group of musicians works differently than tipping a single vendor. Here's how to handle it.

Standard Tip Range
$25-$50 per musician + $50-$100 for bandleader
Standard tip range
Plan on $25 to $50 per musician, with an extra $50 to $100 for the bandleader. For a 5-piece band, that's $175 to $350 total. The bandleader coordinates with you throughout the night, handles song requests, and manages the group. That extra work deserves extra recognition.
How to distribute
Give the total tip to the bandleader in a labeled envelope at the end of the reception. They'll handle distribution to the rest of the group. Don't try to tip each musician individually during the event. It's awkward and interrupts their flow.
Owner vs hired musicians
If the bandleader owns the company, tipping is optional but appreciated. The individual musicians are almost always employees or contractors, so the tip matters more to them. When in doubt, tip the full amount and let the leader distribute it.
When to tip
End of the reception, as the band is wrapping up their last set. Have a family member or wedding planner deliver the envelope if you're busy. Don't wait until after the event since you might forget.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I tip ceremony musicians the same as reception band?
Ceremony musicians (like a string quartet) are tipped separately. $15 to $50 per musician is standard for ceremony music. They're usually different people from your reception band.
What if the band was just okay?
A lower-end tip of $25 per musician is still appropriate if they did the job. Save the bigger tips for bands that really made the night special.
